Die hard horror fans love and stand behind this film simply because of the era it's from and the man behind it, but Carpenter original or not, the bottom line is The Fog is pretty boring. It's important to note that it boasts a couple firsts and certainly laid the ground work for many movies to follow, but that's not enough to ignore the pacing problems and the lackluster dialogue. It's a perfect premise in my eyes - fun, lore heavy, easy to grasp, but expandable - unfortunately, it's just not executed all that well even considering the year it was made.
