Just lazy from start to finish. The whole movie is stuffed to the gills with classic jump scare effects from hinged mirror gags to flooded bath tubs, which are effective, but totally unearned and ended up just confusing the story more than pushing it forward. There was mouch story to move regardless. It plays over a few years and follows three or for families at once, which was just an excuse to use the same tricks over and over again with different characters. The make up looks great, but only because it's been perfected over a thousand uses since the exorcist. This movie would serve great as some wannabe effects artist's reel, but as a fully fleshed out piece it falls way way short.
