ARTIST STATEMENT
Oh sweet little thesis project. It took exactly 9 months to make and I went through labor. The birth was hard
and violent. Lots of blood and sweat. But, I am so proud of my child and everything I’ve ever done makes me
feel delighted to be called its mommy. I love making what I make so viscerally. I spent a long time in school
trying to figure out what exactly it is that my brain wants my hands to do. I found a way to bring what I was
practicing in school (painting) into something else way more awesome. So many of the fine art skills I learned
goes into stop motion. I understand animation in such a traditional way and stop motion is the perfect outlet
for that hands-on itch that I need to scratch. I’m so inspired by the moments of said traditional art that
appear in shows like SpongeBob and Crashbox. This project is really just a celebration of the idea that I can
make whatever the f I want!

ARTIST BIO
Ciara Sergi is a Pratt Institute graduate who received her BFA with a focus in painting. She is a Brooklyn
based oil painter and stop motion animator who sails the seas of traditional animation on her fine arts raft.
With her passion for meticulous detail, she births gloopy, fish-like creatures and the post-apocalypic, toxic
worlds that they live in. While exploring ideas of nonsense, sorrow, and feeling exposed, she animates these
beings in situations that they'd probably opt out of if they had the choice. They're pretty quiet about it.
