Blood Red Sky focuses on a uniquely unexplored corner of the Vampire realm and grounds its larger than life plot in modern science, making for an exceptionally satisfying watch. Leading lady, Peri Baumeister, delivers an exceptionally tormented performance as a young mother struggling to suppress her inevitable transformation. We have seen vamps of this caliber before - reminiscent of the animalistic yet sapient beasts of the Stakeland series - but Thorwarth's detail oriented direction and the effects crew's ability to create a terrifying makeup that allows even the most subtle emotions to bleed through, results in a watch that feels totally original. With a premise that easily could have come across as hokey - snakes on a plane, but with vampires this time - Blood Red Sky's smart action, complex cast, and masterful makeup is a welcome surprise.
