The whole movie is made up of a bunch of tropey story telling tools that are stolen from better movies. The problem is each better movie that those tools are derived from are of different and conflicting genres which leaves this film a smattered mosaic of clashing ideas, thoughts and feelings. Some Wes Anderson text meets, Ferris Beulars Day Off characters and dialogue, which turns to Quentin Tarantino western soundtrack which tapers off into sudden horror ECU shots, plus some weird ass 80's music. The whole thing is just very very amateur. They wanted the personality to carry the film but what they thought would build that personality just came across as confusing and, at best, annoying.
